After an encouraging first year at Stamford Bridge, the Netherlands international is looking to establish himself under Alonso, having featured in a variety of roles during pre-season.
Speaking from Chelsea’s training camp in Hong Kong, Hato said he never doubted his decision to join the club despite a slow start to life in west London.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Chelsea,” he told the club’s official website.
“Even though I wasn’t playing too much at the start, I never regretted it. I knew that I’d made a good decision to transfer to Chelsea.
“I’m really happy with the people here, and with my team-mates. I’m excited to push on. We have a great manager and we have a great opportunity to push for trophies.”

While acknowledging it is still early in Alonso’s tenure, Hato believes the squad has the potential to enjoy a successful campaign.
“It’s very early to say that, of course, but I have the faith and the confidence in this team that we could do something special this season.”
The 21-year-old also highlighted his versatility as one of his biggest strengths. Having played at centre-back, left-back and in midfield during his career, Hato believes his tactical flexibility suits Alonso’s approach.
“We know the manager is very flexible with his approach, and we are like that as a team,” he said.
“Whether we play with a back four or a three, there are roles for me because I can play as a centre-back or as a left-back.
“For me, it doesn’t really matter. I’m happy to play wherever I’m needed, and whenever I put on the Chelsea shirt, I give my all.”
Hato has featured prominently during Chelsea’s pre-season campaign and will hope to build on his growing influence as Alonso prepares the Blues for the new Premier League season.
