Tony Romo in Talks With CBS Sports ‘About Next Steps’ After OWI Arrest

CBS Sports football analyst Tony Romo is in contact with the network about “next steps” after being placed on leave in July following his arrest for OWI (Operating While Intoxicated).
According to TheWrap, Romo’s representative said the lead NFL color analyst is in touch with CBS Sports. This came after reports that Romo was facing three new charges related to his July arrest, including first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing open intoxicants in his vehicle.

“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved,” the former football star’s spokesperson told TMZ.
The spokesperson added that they are “working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close,” as well as “communicating with CBS about next steps.”
Romo, who played quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys for 13 seasons, joined CBS Sports in April 2017 after his retirement. His reported 10-year $180 million contract with CBS lasts until 2030.
As previously reported, CBS Sports announced on July 31 that Romo would be “on leave until further notice” at the network. This came after his July 23 arrest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on suspicion of driving under the influence. According to local authorities, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped his vehicle on Interstate 43.
A first-offense OWI is treated as a civil case rather than a criminal charge under Wisconsin law.

Speaking at the recent NFL season preview event in New York, network boss David Berson said the situation with Romo is “evolving” and “therefore we’re still investigating.”
“There is no timetable or final decision at this time,” he continued. “We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand. That’s very important to us. Whether the games, marketing, PR, social, the focus should be, and needs to be, on our presentation and this great product, and not on any other factors.”
Berson also thanked those who have stepped up during Romo’s absence, including J.J. Watt and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson. “Fortunately, we have a very deep bench,” the network chief stated.
