While there weren't a ton of surprises, given that Fisch had already confirmed three freshmen—left tackle Kodi Greene, defensive tackle Derek Colman-Brusa, and edge rusher Ramzak Fruean—were all going to start, while a fourth, cornerback Jeron Jones, was given the "or" designation as a potential starter alongside junior Rahshawn Clark, who was also named the starting kick and punt returner.
The most notable absence from the depth chart is center Landen Hatchett, who started nine games in 2025 before a broken wrist ended his season. The fourth-year has done practically everything except participate in team drills during fall camp, as he hasn't been cleared for contact just yet, which appears to be the final hurdle in his recovery, while Sam Houston State transfer Kolt Dieterich is expected to start in his place.

"Landen's getting better," Fisch said in mid-August. "I don't know if we're going to be able to get him to go this week, though, so we'll see, but he's gotten much better each day...he's been cleared for almost everything, but the contact part."
Elsewhere on the depth chart, a pair of sophomores look ready to break into the starting lineup. Linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale earned the "or" designation alongside senior Xe'ree Alexander, while tight end Baron Naone earned a potential starting spot next to 2024 Freshman All-American Decker DeGraaf.
Fisch has said all offseason that he's looking to rely heavily on the 2026 class to break into the rotation, and he placed nine freshmen in the initial depth chart, with wide receivers Jordan Clay, Trez Davis, and Mason James, offensive lineman Dominic Harris, and safety Gavin Day all listed.
