‘I will not be silenced’: Enes Kanter Freedom suing WNBA team

Enes Kanter Freedom has filed a lawsuit against the Chicago Sky, stemming from his ejection from Wintrust Arena last month following an altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud.
Kanter Freedom announced the news Thursday afternoon on X, including a photo of the first page of his lawsuit.

“I’m taking legal action over my ejection from the @chicagosky game while peacefully exercising my First Amendment rights,” the former NBA center wrote. “My T-shirt did what the whole @WNBA apparently couldn’t: define a woman. No threats. No violence. Just biology. And somehow, that required a security escort. You don’t have to agree with my speech but you don’t get to silence me for it. I will not be intimidated. I will not be silenced. I will continue to stand for women and defend free speech.”

Kanter Freedom: Ban ‘unconstitutional’
Kanter Freedom’s claim was filed in U.S. District Court and cites the Chicago Women’s Basketball Operations, LLC, which runs the Sky, as a defendant, along with the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA), which financed and built Wintrust Arena, and the City of Chicago.
In the suit, he argues that the three entities “combined and conspired” and “wrongfully ejected” him from the Aug. 23 game and subsequently permanently banned him from Wintrust Arena because of his views on gender identity and transgender athletes in women’s sports.
“The Chicago Sky; MPEA, through Wintrust Arena Security; and the City of Chicago, by its Police Department, worked together to eject Plaintiff in retaliation for protected expression, and continue to work together to enforce the ongoing, unconstitutional ban of Plaintiff from Wintrust Arena, which is public property owned by MPEA,” the claim reads.
Incident with Cloud at center
Kanter Freedom sat courtside at the game wearing a shirt reading “WOMAN noun, adult human female.” During the third quarter of the game, he says he stood up and celebrated a three-pointer made by Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever, who has spoken out against transgender women playing women’s sports.
At that point, Kanter Freedom says Cloud “initiated a vulgar, profanity-laced verbal tirade” and “charged nearly half the length of the court” to confront him courtside.
“Plaintiff Freedom believes that Cloud’s attack was motivated and triggered by the message on Plaintiff’s shirt and Plaintiff’s widely publicized viewpoint on protecting the integrity of women only sports,” the lawsuit adds.
Kanter Freedom is asking the court to declare the defendants violated his First Amendment rights and is also seeking “an award of nominal and compensatory damages for Plaintiff’s losses incurred.”
