Katin Houser's Incredible Hail Mary Extends Illinois Halftime Lead

Illinois football's passing attack was expected to be one of the strengths of the team heading into opening night against the UAB Blazers, and it has been as advertised so far.

Former East Carolina star and offseason transfer Katin Houser led Illinois' first half offense to a 10.6 yards per play average as Illinois staked a 21-13 halftime lead over the visitors from Birmingham, Ala.

Houser's first touchdown pass with the Fighting Illini was a crisp one, as he found Collin Dixon in the left corner of the end zone. 

His second touchdown pass was far more unexpected, as he let loose a Hail Mary that found the sure hands of sixth-year wide receiver Ty Robinson just before halftime.

Robinson helped the Fighting Illini increase their lead before halftime when he snagged one of the most impressive catches of the young college football season so far. 

Houser dropped back and had all day to throw against a non-existent Blazers pass rush. 

He let the pass fly from his own 42-yard-line with a perfect spiral toward the middle and front part of the end zone. 

The ball looked like it might be picked off by a UAB defender, but was bobbled and eventually caught by the Fighting Illini receiver, much to the delight of the Champaign, Ill. crowd. 

Houser's Strong First Half Breeds Confidence

Houser's strong first half inspired confidence in Fighting Illini fans as he took care of the football and was incredibly efficient, showing the same type of polished skills he showed at East Carolina, rather than the uneven play he showed at Michigan State. 

He finished the first half with six-of-eight completions for 100 yards and two touchdowns and did not throw an interception. 

As the second half started, Houser hit Dixon for another touchdown, the Illini QB's third of the night, to give Illinois a 28-13 lead. 

Illini Defense Shredded on the Ground

Houser was forced to overcome a strong rushing attack by the Blazers in the first half, which included 11 carries for 49 yards from Roderick Robinson II and 9 carries for 45 yards by Braylon McReynolds.

Blazers QB Ryder Burton added 17 yards rushing, continuing a troublesome pattern for the Fighting Illini defense in their first game of the season. 

Illinois' vaunted pass defense was uncharacteristically a bit shaky as it gave up 95 yards in the first half to Burton and his receiving targets. 

Illinois started out strong with a long touchdown run by Ca'Lil Valentine, but its performance afterward allowed UAB back in the game. 

Moving forward, the Fighting Illini will need to tighten up the defense, and continue its explosive ways on offense, to secure a season-opening victory against a team it was favored to beat by nearly three scores.
