The Cowboys on Thursday made three alterations in the contracts of a trio of high-priced standouts and in doing do have created $19 million in salary-cap room.
The trio: Veteran defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland and tight end Jake Ferguson.
The changes, first reported by ESPN, don't change the salaries of the involved players; as is often the case, this is largely simply a bookkeeping move.
But it does push their money into future years, adding ballast to down-the-road salary caps.
Owners Jerry and Stephen Jones have in the past argued against this strategy, insisting that teams eventually "pay the piper'' when doing this.
In reality, for a team that thinks it's a contender now? It's a clever way to manipulate the cap.
Oh, and yes, it's also a way to create immediate room for a coming blockbuster acquisition ... so Cowboys fans who dream of Dallas trading for a pricy talent like Raiders pass-rusher Maxx Crosby?
This sort of move can fit that dream.
Dallas now figures to have about $33 million in cap room for 2026. As it happens, if Crosby is traded, his acquiring team would reportedly initially be on the hook for $31 million for the season, though a restructuring of that deal can be in play as well.
Want to keep dreaming? We have no idea why the Patriots would trade away star cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who happens to be a DFW native embroiled in a contract dispute, so that seems unlikely.
Miami linebacker Jordyn Brooks or free agent linebacker Bobby Wagner? Maybe, but they're not this expensive. Arizona EDGE Josh Sweat or any other target? Sure - dream away!
Oh, and one more (though this doesn't explain the timing): This $33 million, if not spent this year, can carryover and help the 2027 cap. ... when George Pickens is slated to be a free agent.
Yes, $33 million is about how much it might cost to pay Pickens - particularily in the form of a second franchise tag.
Per ESPN, the new cap flexibility for 2026 season means that Clark's 2027 cap number jumps up about $1.5 million, that Bland's number jumps by $2.15 million annually and that Ferguson's jumps by $1.2 million.
So even with the move, and even understanding the philosophical arguments here, that's not that much to "pay the piper'' ... especially if it helps the Cowboys contend for postseason success.
