It’s easy to let that pass as just another date on the calendar. But the equinox is one of only two moments a year when the whole planet, hemispheres and all, is briefly on equal footing.
For South Africans, it marks the real start of astronomical spring: not the meteorological one some calendars quietly slipped in on 1 September.
The sun will rise almost exactly due east that morning and set almost exactly due west that evening, something it only does twice a year.
It’s also the point where the seasons flip relative to the rest of the world. While Johannesburg and Cape Town are shaking off winter, the Northern Hemisphere is doing the opposite, sliding into autumn on the very same date.
So what actually happens astronomically during the spring equinox?
An equinox occurs when the sun sits directly above Earth’s equator, rather than tilted toward either the Northern or Southern Hemisphere.
Earth’s axis is tilted about 23.5 degrees, which is why we have seasons in the first place, but twice a year, at the equinoxes, that tilt lines up side-on to the sun instead of toward or away from it.
The practical result: day and night come close to 12 hours each almost everywhere on Earth, in every country, on the same calendar date.
It’s the only day of the year when South Africa and, say, Canada experience near-identical day lengths, even though one is heading into spring and the other into autumn.
“Equal day and night” is a bit of a myth
Despite the name (equinox comes from the Latin for “equal night”), the day isn’t exactly split 12 hours and 12 hours anywhere.
Two things throw it off: the sun is a disc, not a point, so its edge is technically visible slightly before and after it’s geometrically “risen” or “set.”
Atmospheric refraction bends sunlight enough to make the sun appear above the horizon a few minutes before it’s actually there.
Add those together, and most places see a few extra minutes of daylight on the equinox itself, with the true 12-hour split (called the “equilux”) landing a few days earlier or later depending on latitude.
What the spring equinox means for South African skies and seasons
From this point until the December solstice, South Africa’s days keep getting longer, and the sun’s path climbs higher through the sky.
It’s part of why late September through November brings some of the country’s most reliable outdoor weather, before summer’s afternoon thunderstorms properly set in over the Highveld.
It’s also roughly when a few seasonal markers line up around the country: jacarandas start budding in Pretoria and Joburg, the last of the Cape’s whale-watching season winds down, and the Cape’s famous wildflower bloom is typically already in full swing further up the West Coast.
So, for South Africa, the spring equinox on 23 September is the official handover from winter to spring, due-east sunrise and all.
