Sean McVay admits Rams were outplayed by 49ers

McVay did not look for excuses after the defeat and instead credited Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers for their performance.

Speaking after the game, the Rams head coach said: “First of all, congratulations to the 49ers. They outplayed us in every facet. I didn’t do a nearly a good enough job. This is a humbling day for us. This will define us only if we allow it to, and today was one of those days. I always look inside out, I didn’t do a good enough job getting us ready to go. There were some opportunities where maybe the game could’ve flipped, but they deserve the win.”

McVay also acknowledged that his team had been given a difficult lesson in Melbourne.

He added: “They were ready to go. We’ll look at it, we’ll see where we can improve and be better moving forward. This is a good, humbling day. … Sometimes sports can humble you and today was one of those days. I make no excuses.”

The defeat also continued a difficult run for McVay against Shanahan. Colin Cowherd pointed out that McVay has a 37 per cent win rate against Shanahan and Matt LaFleur, compared with his 66 per cent record overall.

The Rams now have to regroup before their Week 2 meeting with the New York Giants on September 21. McVay will be hoping his side can respond quickly after being shut out throughout the second half in Australia.
