Virginia Tech began the James Franklin era with a 73-3 win over VMI. With such a convincing win, multiple quarterbacks got time under center. The quarterbacks combined to go 27-for-32. Ethan Grunkmeyer completed 17-of-20 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Grunkmeyer transferred from Penn State, Franklin’s previous home for 12 seasons. The Hokies’ defense was also on point, with the run defense holding VMI to -4 yards. No matter the opponent, that is an impressive feat.
Old Dominion might not be a Top 25 caliber team, but it’s a sound Sun Belt team that played well in a 31-10 win over Norfolk State last week. Quarterback Quinn Henicle opened his season scoring four touchdowns for the Monarchs. He passed for 143 yards and led the team in rushing with 68 yards. Henicle had two passing and two running touchdowns, along with one interception.
The Virginia schools have played each other seven times, with Virginia Tech leading the rivalry 4-3. Old Dominion upset Virginia Tech 45-26 last season. While this obviously wasn’t the first win for Old Dominion in the rivalry, the sheer amount of points scored by the school was surprising.
