Vote for Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week for Sept. 6-12

The week of Sept. 6-12 was a busy week of high school female sports featuring schools from the Ames area.

In high school volleyball, Class 4A No. 8 Ballard was 3-3, 3A No. 10 Roland-Story went 4-2 and Ames 2-0. The Gilbert and Nevada girls cross country teams ran at the Gilbert Invitational in Ames and Ames was at the Bobcat Invitational in Marshalltown on Sept. 10.

The Ames girls swimming and diving team defeated Newton in dual on Sept. 8 (120-63) and they placed fifth at the Linn-Mar Invitational on Sept. 12. The Ames girls tennis team fell to Urbandale and Waukee Northwest on Sept. 11.

There were several other competitive events featuring girls teams from the Ames area during the week. A large number of individuals stood out during the week.

Here are the Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week nominees for the week of Sept. 6-12. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Harper Weig, Nevada

Weig provided the Nevada girls cross country team with a top-20 individual showing in a loaded field of competition during the varsity girls race at the Gilbert Invitational on Sept. 10 at the ISU cross country course in Ames.

The Cub freshman completed the 5-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 13.46 seconds to take 18th overall.

Jayden Peters, Collins-Maxwell

Peters placed second in the varsity girls race at the Colfax-Mingo Invitational cross country meet on Sept. 10 at Colfax.

Peters completed the 5k course in 21:09.5. She finished just 6.8 seconds behind the winning time of 21:02.7 by Montezuma's Ava Anderson.

Kara Patterson, Roland-Story

Patterson provided the Roland-Story girls cross country team with a runner-up performance at the Greene County Invitational on Sept. 10 in Jefferson.

Patterson ran a 5k time of 21:21.94. Her time only trailed the 20:31.47 effort by Perry's Lily Myers.

Ellie McCorkle, Ames

McCorkle placed first in the 200-yard freestyle race and she came in second in the 500 freestyle during the Linn-Mar Invitational girls swimming and diving meet on Sept. 12 at Marion.

McCorkle won the 200 in 1:54.58. She clocked in at 5:13.43 in the 500 to trail only the 5:12.18 effort by Dowling Catholic's Charlotte Qualley.

Hailey Estrem, Ballard

Estrem turned in another great match at setter for the 4A No. 8 Ballard volleyball team during two-set victories over Cedar Rapids Washington and Regina Catholic at the Iowa City West Invitational on Sept. 12 in Iowa City.

Estrem had 10 assists, two digs and one kill against Washington. She put up 15 assists, seven digs and one kill versus Regina.
