Nearly 10 months after Lane Kiffin’s controversial departure from LSU football, Ole Miss finally got the opportunity to face its former head coach and hand him a defeat. The Rebels took advantage of that opportunity, but even after the loss, Kiffin appeared unwilling to let go of the criticism of his former program.

During Wednesday’s SEC Football Coaches Teleconference, Kiffin described LSU’s matchup against Ole Miss as essentially the Rebels’ “Super Bowl,” suggesting that the game carried an unusually high level of importance for his former team.
“If it wasn’t for the name, Ole Miss, and if it was more of a traditional name that we were playing, we hadn’t coached at before, how would everybody be feeling if, in the third game of your first year of a program, you went to Ohio State and came all the way back?” Kiffin said (h/t Daniel Hager of On3).

The game also represented Kiffin’s first return to Oxford since he left Ole Miss to take over at LSU. Kiffin and the Tigers entered the highly anticipated game with plenty of confidence after opening the season undefeated at 2-0.
However, Kiffin’s much-hyped return to Oxford ultimately did not go according to plan. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss delivered one of the strongest performances of his career, leading the Rebels to a 32-24 win over LSU.
With Kiffin making his emotional return to Oxford, the LSU-Ole Miss game created one of the most interesting storylines in college football. Kiffin had spent six seasons building Ole Miss from a middle-of-the-pack program into a legitimate national contender.
However, just as the Rebels were preparing for the College Football Playoff push, Kiffin made the unexpected decision to leave Oxford and take the LSU job.
Ole Miss has already shown this season that its success does not necessarily depend on Kiffin remaining on the sideline. The Rebels have opened the season 3-0, while Kiffin’s LSU team dropped to 2-1 following the defeat in Oxford.
