Colts DE Laiatu Latu still figuring out details of chest injury

INDIANAPOLIS — Colts defensive end Laiatu Latu is still trying to figure out exactly how he hurt his chest in Sunday’s win over the Texans.
Latu left the game early in the first quarter, obviously in pain after tackling CJ Stroud in the backfield, and for a long time, it looked like he would not return.

But he was able to get back in the game in the second half. Latu, who’d been dealing with pain since suffering the injury, saw an opportunity when the pain in his chest finally subsided considerably.
“I just started feeling like it was easing up a little bit and I didn’t want to leave my boys hanging,” Latu said.
Latu declined to offer details on his diagnosis or his potential prognosis in the locker room after the game.
When he first suffered the injury, Latu held his left arm motionless, presumably because of the pain in his chest.
From the sounds of it, the Colts will continue to evaluate the injury.
“I’m still figuring that out right now,” Latu said. “He kind of landed on me, but I’ve got to go back and figure out what really happened.”
Indianapolis cannot afford to lose Latu for a significant amount of time.
Latu, the team’s primary edge rusher, has only half a sack through the first three games, but he entered Sunday’s game leading the team with eight pressures, albeit pressures that often take a long time to develop. Without Latu on the field for most of Sunday’s game, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner likely took over the team lead in pressures; Buckner had seven in the first two games, but he was dominant on Sunday, racking up 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hits.
Replacing Latu is not easy. Jaylahn Tuimoloau, the team’s second-round pick in 2025, played most of Latu’s snaps in the starter’s absence, and recorded only one tackle.
Latu is hoping he’ll be fine when the Colts take on Washington in London next week.
“I got hurt a little bit during the game,” Latu said. “Wish I was there a little bit more.”
