Green Bay Packers sign slot WR to practice squad after losing Jayden Reed to injury

Earlier this year, the Green Bay Packers gave wide receiver Jayden Reed a three-year $50.25 million contract. Obviously, this was a signal that they wanted him to be a part of their long-term plans, and viewed him as a critical piece of their offense.

Unfortunately, Reed suffered a scary neck injury in Week Two against the New York Jets. While he has full control and motion of his limbs, it is not yet known when, or if, he will be able to return this year. This has been just one, albeit terrible, example of how the 2026 season has gotten off to a bad start for the Packers.
Other injuries on the offensive line, as well as the poor play of the line as a whole, have led to a 1-2 start and serious concerns that Green Bay may be heading to obscurity.

Reed, as fans are aware, is/was the Packers starting slot wide receiver. With him out, other pass catchers have failed to produce at the desired level. Of course, Green Bay’s lack of pass protection among their offensive lineman has played a major role in this unfortunate development.
Still, the Packers wanted to ensure that they have depth at wide receiver in the event they should need it. As such, Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated reported that the team has signed Coleman Owen.
“The Green Bay Packers signed the former Ohio receiver to the practice squad following a Tuesday workout, a source told Packers On SI,” Huber wrote.
Owen, who went undrafted last year, played two games as a kick returner for the Indianapolis Colts in 2025. In 2024, while playing for Ohio, he had 78 receptions for 1,245 yards and eight touchdowns.
He will start on Green Bay’s practice squad for now as Green Bay currently has plenty of healthy pass catchers. It is good to know, though, that they now have some depth.
