Stevens High graduate, former basketball co-captain killed in West Central Texas crash

A Stevens High School graduate and former co-captain of the Falcons basketball team was killed in a rollover crash in West Texas.

Bakari James DiAngelo Brown, 18, was identified by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened about 10 p.m. Friday in Scurry County, about 80 miles northwest of Abilene.

According to investigators, Brown was driving north on U.S. 84 at a high rate of speed when he lost control, left the roadway and rolled the vehicle.

Brown was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to DPS. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Stevens boys basketball coaching staff shared a photo of Brown on social media, asking the community to keep his family and friends in their thoughts as they mourn his sudden loss.

Brown served as a co-captain of the Stevens Falcons during the 2025-26 season and earned second-team All-District honors.

He played four years of basketball at Stevens and spent his final two seasons on the varsity team.

In a social media post, the coaching staff remembered Brown as a valued teammate whose impact extended beyond the court.

"Sudden and truly sad news for all that knew him. We all feel a huge loss," the coaches said.
