‘He’s not very good’: ESPN analyst rips new Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy

Following the devastating news that New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart would require season-ending knee surgery after going down against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2, the franchise has turned to veteran backup Jameis Winston to step up in his place. After the Giants eked out a 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the franchise has decided to bolster its quarterback room by trading with the Minnesota Vikings to acquire J.J. McCarthy in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick.
Although McCarthy, who never quite lived up to expectations as a top-10 pick for the Vikings, will be behind Winston on the depth chart, if the offense doesn’t improve, he will no doubt get the chance to show that he can contribute to winning at the NFL level.
Peter Schrager was high on the trade on ESPN’s Big Day, citing his contractual control for the next two years and his familiarity with the Harbaugh brothers (John Harbaugh is the head coach of the Giants) after winning a national championship with Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan.
One ESPN analyst, however, isn’t sold on McCarthy’s ability.
“He’s not very good,” former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. said of McCarthy and the trade. “So, uh, doesn’t really say much for me. Fifth-round draft pick; he’s a top-10 pick . Interesting, unique, and, uh, good luck to him.”

Another NFL analyst at the Worldwide Leader believes even if McCarthy can impress on the field, it’ll lead to problems for the franchise.
“I hate it. I think it’s a terrible idea for the Giants,” Dan Graziano said on Tuesday’s episode of Get Up. “I honestly believe this is a move that could cause more problems than it fixes. Because, I mean, you have in your room, you have a 23-year-old starter who just got hurt, who does not— who has not established, you know, himself in the league yet. He’s shown plenty.
“You supposedly believe in him. Now you bring in a guy who’s the same age as him, who was drafted higher, who’s gonna make more money than he is next year. The Giants are on the hook for almost $4 million for this guy for next season. What is the upside?”
It’ll be interesting to see how the situation plays out. New York’s next game is on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
