BLUEFIELD — Bluefield High School’s potent passing threat has had some impressive moments during the first half of the season.

But none have been quite as impressive all-around as the display it put on during Friday night’s 63-6 homecoming victory over visiting George Wythe at Mitchell Stadium.

Quarterback Max Simpson competed nine of 13 passing attempts for 322 yards and five touchdowns as the Beavers scored nine times over nine possessions during the festive rout.

By the time homecoming activities took to the field at intermission, Bluefield comfortably led 47-0 and the starters were for all purposes finished for the evening.

The “Max and Pax Show,” which at times played a surprisingly subdued role in the Beavers’ steady recovery from season opening losses to Graham and Princeton — was on full and blazing display.

Wide receiver Pax Calhoun had five catches for 188 yards and four touchdowns, including the electrifying 86-yard catch-and-run that initiated scoring for Bluefield. He also had a 38-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter and a 3-yard TD catch toward the end of it.

Calhoun concluded his scoring catch slam with 2:15 remaining in the first half on a 47-yard touchdown reception.

Bluefield’s ever-improving offensive front bought lots of time for Simpson, whose longest scoring throw of the night was his 78-yard ICBM to Jamarius Smith.

While somewhat upstaged by the by the artillery, the Beavers rushing attack remained impressive. Jeremiah Jones rushed for 89 yards on five carries, including his 34-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He also had a 2-point conversion run.

In the second half, the Beavers got a 49 yard touchdown run in the third quarter from Davin Williams capped by a Hunter Murray 2-point conversion run. In the final stanza Murray got loose for a 58-yard touchdown run. Both TD runs were firsts for the two freshman teammates.

The Maroons (2-4) were tricksy from the outset and, at first glance, fortune favored their boldness. The Maroons recovered an onsides kick on the opening kickoff, setting up a short field opening possession. They managed to drive it at the Bluefield 14-yard-line, where the Beavers defense recovered its efficient and disagreeable demeanor, stopping the possession on downs.

One Bluefield snap later, Simpson’s opening scoring strike to Calhoun opened the floodgates.

Coy Francis scored George Wythe’s lone touchdown on a 66-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

The Beavers (4-2) host Nicholas County at Mitchell Stadium on Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
