Tyler Herro was already the centerpiece of the trade on the Heat's side, and he knew it. In fact, Herro was prepared for the trade to happen back in February, but the deal did not materialize, so he made sure to keep playing for the Heat.

Tyler Herro knew he was almost traded back in February

As one of the cornerstones of the Heat in the 2020s, Herro managed to carve out a solid career for himself in South Beach. Unfortunately, he always had his trade value looming over him, and that reached its peak in the last few months.

When the Antetokounmpo trade rumors were at their peak before the February 2026 deadline, the Heat were the favorites to land him with a package centered on Herro as the biggest name.

That eventually happened a few months later, but it was always looming over Herro. It was a big deal for him because he had to deal with that while still playing for the team that wants to trade him.

"I think it was close to getting done at the deadline, from what I’ve heard and what my agent heard in the past season in like February. I mean, at the deadline we had like a lockout day in Miami. They thought it was getting done too," Herro said on SiriusXM NBA Radio about the trade almost happening earlier.

Herro and his personal team actually pushed for it to happen back then because it would have given him clarity earlier. Now, he is with the Bucks, which is a good coincidence because it is his hometown team.
