‘The North East does not seem to matter beyond violence’: Journalist Hoihnu Hauz on her new book

When violence broke out in Manipur in 2023, Hoihnu Hauzel was “in a state of disbelief”. Her home was burnt down and her family had to flee to a neighbouring state.
A journalist for the past 15 years, Hauzel said she had not intended to make a record of such a disaster. But then a publication asked her to write a piece.
“…It dawned on me that the only thing I could do was write and not to keep an account, but to document what was unfolding in front of me,” she said.
The result was Stories the Fire Could Not Burn, a personal account of the ethnic conflict that has left more than 300 people dead and close to 60,000 displaced. Her book of poetry, Requiem for a Home in Manipur, is a personal reflection on the loss of home during the prolonged unrest in the state.
Currently an independent writer, Hauzel continues to promote the North East through her writings and entrepreneurial ventures. Her work explores food history, cultural practice, regional identity and themes of resilience.
