HOUSTON —J.J. McCarthy thrilled the Giants with his starting debut Sunday in Houston.

Afterward, the quarterback offered a forward-looking message as coach John Harbaugh’s team went 4-2-1 after a 27-21 overtime win against the Texans.

“This is just the beginning,” McCarthy said. “We’re a football team that wants to win games, a lot of games. We have aspirations for ourselves.”

The Giants were 10.5-point underdogs.

McCarthy played crisply while fully taking over for Jameis Winston — who, of course, had replaced Jaxson Dart.

McCarthy completed 20 of 28 passes. He didn’t turn the ball over. He threw for 252 yards. He posted a 99.1 passer rating. And he showed that maybe he isn’t a first-round bust after all.

Even as plenty more work remains for McCarthy and the Giants in this wild season — with Dart sidelined for the year early in the second game — he is embracing what’s ahead.

The Vikings recently ditched him after giving him 10 (mostly uneven) starts, all last year.

“Obviously, there were moments in the past where I was like: Why me?” McCarthy said.

Then he mentioned something that recently came up during one of the Giants’ chapel sessions: “Don’t ask why. Ask what’s next.”

McCarthy added, “You think you’re starting over, but you’re starting from experience.”

That is the mindset McCarthy brings to this role as he tries to show he can actually be a legit NFL starting quarterback.

On Sunday, he looked decisive, made smart choices and impressed his teammates.

“He did phenomenal,” right guard Francis Mauigoa told NJ.com. “The kid is a true natural — a natural leader.”

Mauigoa noticed that in the huddle.

“He was poised,” Mauigoa said. “He was calm. He took ownership.”

Specifically, Mauigoa said McCarthy quickly and accurately checked from one play to another, based on how the defense aligned.

“That shows me that he’s got his stuff handled,” Mauigoa said. “That earns a lot of people’s trust.”
