Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic has surpassed LeBron James in a key Los Angeles Lakers scoring statistic in under 100 games for the franchise.

LeBron averaged 25.9 points, 7.9 assists and 7.7 rebounds in 479 games over eight seasons for the Lakers. While it’s a small portion of LeBron’s 24-year career, James left LA as one of the most productive players on one of the greatest NBA franchises of all time.

However, LeBron’s incredible production already seems to be falling short of former teammate Doncic, who is leading the Lakers without LeBron for the first time and has made franchise history in just his fourth game of the 2026-27 season.

Luka Doncic surpasses LeBron James for most 40-point games as a Laker

Doncic scored 41 points in the Lakers’ first loss of the season to the Portland Trail Blazers, following up a 52-point performance in their last win. While LA fell to a 136-129 loss to Portland, Doncic registered the 20th 40-point game of his Lakers career.

LeBron, in his eight seasons in LA, had only 18 games with 40+ points. This means Doncic surpassed LeBron’s 40-point scoring record on the Lakers against the Jazz, and has now added more distance with another one against the Blazers.

Doncic is now sixth all-time in 40-point games for the Lakers, trailing fifth-placed George Mikan (23) by three. Shaquille O’Neal sits fourth with 26 before a big gap to No. 3 with Jerry West, who had 66 40-point games. Elgin Baylor sits No. 2 with 88, while Kobe Bryant leads with 122.

LeBron was never a high-volume scorer like Doncic, as Doncic has averaged 32.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.1 assists through his young career with the Lakers so far.

Despite being outdone on pure production, Doncic will have to deliver a championship to LA before he can claim any sort of superiority over LeBron as a Laker. They do look competitive this season, but their defensive failure in the loss to the Blazers should give them reason to be concerned.
