At least 80 persons had been injured due to the collision, including 50 who were in serious condition, BBC reported.
The collision occurred in the province of Toledo, south of Madrid, when a train operated by state-owned rail company Renfe struck the rear of a stationary train run by private operator Iryo.
The Iryo train had stopped near Toledo because of a signal fault, reported Reuters. The Renfe train struck it at high speed, causing several carriages on both trains to derail.
Renfe said its train had been authorised to continue its journey before the collision with the train that remained stationary “for reasons we do not know”.
The crash is Spain’s second major railway accident this year. In January, 46 persons were killed when two trains operated by Renfe and Iryo collided on the same line, Reuters reported.
