Julian Champagnie has already made a habit of rewriting the San Antonio Spurs’ record book from beyond the arc, and he did it again on Tuesday night against the Sacramento Kings.

Champagnie drilled eight 3-pointers in the first half at Frost Bank Center, tying his own franchise record for made threes in a half. The forward was nearly perfect, going 8-of-10 from deep and scoring all 24 of his first-half points from long range.

His barrage helped the Spurs pour in 80 points before the break and take an 80-54 lead into halftime.

Champagnie was hardly alone in the onslaught. Victor Wembanyama added 23 points on 11-of-18 shooting to go with nine rebounds and two blocks, while second-year guard Dylan Harper chipped in nine points and five rebounds. De’Aaron Fox added eight points and five assists.

As a team, San Antonio shot 60% from the field and knocked down 13 of its 22 attempts from three. The Spurs also piled up 23 assists against just four turnovers and outscored the Kings 41-25 in the second quarter, building a lead that reached 26 points.

Domantas Sabonis did his best to keep Sacramento afloat with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting, but the Kings had no answer for San Antonio’s shooting. Zach LaVine and De’Andre Hunter each had eight points at the break.

It is not the first time Champagnie has caught fire against an opponent. Last season, he set the Spurs’ single-game record with 11 3-pointers against the New York Knicks, breaking the previous mark of nine held by Chuck Person. He also outshot the entire Houston Rockets roster from three in the first half of a game in January.

Tuesday’s performance puts him on pace to challenge that single-game mark again. With an entire half left to play, he needs just three more makes to tie his franchise record.

The hot start comes at a good time for San Antonio. The Spurs entered the night at 1-2 after dropping their first two games of the season to the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets before bouncing back with a road win over the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.

A win on Tuesday would even their record at 2-2 ahead of Wednesday’s road matchup against the Utah Jazz.
