The Carolina Panthers are turning to veteran cornerback Marco Wilson as injuries leave their secondary dangerously thin ahead of Thursday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers.

ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler recently highlighted Carolina’s shortage, with only two healthy cornerbacks remaining on the 53-man roster. The Panthers are elevating Wilson from the practice squad to provide additional depth for a difficult road matchup against Green Bay’s passing attack.

Carolina has already lost starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson to injured reserve. Akayleb Evans, who had been filling in amid those absences, is also sidelined with injuries to his triceps and knee. That leaves Will Lee III and Chau Smith-Wade as the only healthy cornerbacks on the active roster.

Wilson brings valuable experience to a secondary that has little room for further setbacks. The veteran has made 37 career starts and will help Carolina as it prepares for one of the league’s most dangerous passing offenses in a short week.

Head coach Dave Canales previously described Wilson as a “quicker athletic mover” who could potentially play on the outside. His elevation comes at a difficult time for the Panthers, who are trying to regroup after a heavy loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Green Bay has tough guys on the block as receiving options in Christian Watson and Matthew Golden, both of whom have been productive this season.

The Panthers also enter Thursday’s game without pass rusher Jaelan Phillips, who will miss his second consecutive contest with a hamstring injury. On offense, left guard Damien Lewis has been ruled out with a knee injury, adding to Carolina’s personnel problems.
