The Charlotte Hornets have kept their head above water with a 3-2 start despite missing key starters like Kon Knueppel and Coby White. Grant Williams, a key role player, has also been out.

The good news? Knueppel’s injury seems to be trending in the right direction, with Charlotte Hornets PR announcing that he’s been assigned to the Greensboro Swarm for practice. He’s still out for the intriguing Washington Wizards matchup tonight.

However, the close loss on the road to the Detroit Pistons made one thing extremely clear: the Hornets are a formidable team but desperately need their starters healthy. There’s a real argument to be made that this team should be 4-1 or even 5-0.

Charlotte Is Strong Defensively — But Weak On Other End

Contrary to popular belief, Charlotte has actually opened the year as a legitimately strong defensive team. The Hornets carry a 109.7 defensive rating — which ranks 11th in the league.

How are the Hornets having so much success on the defensive end? Aside from Charles Lee’s scheme and coaching, it’s the ability to dominate the glass on both ends.

Led by Moussa Diabate, Charlotte owns the defensive rebounding rate in the league (according to Cleaning The Glass) through five games — as they are only allowing their opponents to rebound 23.8 percent of their misses. This leads to reduced opportunities to put up points.

The main issue is the offense. The Hornets rank dead last in the NBA with a 102.2 offensive rating. Brandon Miller has been great and is showing why he earned a $209 million contract extension. Yet, the absence of two of their best scorers explains the collapse, but it doesn’t make the reality any easier to stomach.

Adding Kon Knueppel And Coby White Back Instantly Upgrades The Offense

Removing Knueppel — already viewed as a top‑ten shooter after his sensational rookie season — and White, who can initiate offense, pressure the rim, and knock down shots, tanks the ceiling of the offense. Sustained offensive success cannot happen when Brandon Miller has to aggressively take close to 30 shots a game (albeit he looks good so far).

Through five games, Sion James is shooting 5-for-27 from the field and 4-for-24 from three. That type of efficiency is severely handicapping the offense. He’s missing wide-open threes that Knueppel wouldn’t.

Taking pressure off Miller will allow him to move more freely within the offense. Having both Knueppel and White back in the lineup brings in their gravity — as defenders have to lock onto him on the perimeter, while White has the downhill penetration that forces defenses to collapse.

According to DataBallr’s WOWY metrics, when Knueppel and White were both on the court last season, they posted a 125.6 offensive rating, which was 9.7 points better than the league average. If you dive deeper, they posted a 129.7 offensive rating when you add Miller to that lineup, which makes it 13.7 points better than the league average.

The Last Word

Injuries tend to be the theme when you bring up Hornets basketball. Lee’s squad has been stout defensively, but the blemishes are starting to show without Knueppel and White.

Charlotte has depth to weather the storm — and that’s exactly why they are sitting with a winning record at the end of October. They should continue to be a competitive basketball team going forward outside of the outlier 47-point blowout loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

However, if they want to seriously push for a Hornets playoff appearance, Knueppel needs to start ramping up and playing in the next few games. That goes for White and Williams as well.
