Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci has delivered a scathing assessment of his old team after they surrendered a 14-point fourth-quarter lead in their 33-30 overtime defeat to the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cowboys looked in control for much of the game but once again struggled to close out a contest, leaving them with a 3-5 record and plenty of questions.

Dak Prescott and the offence failed to find an answer as Gardner Minshew led Arizona back into the game after replacing Jacoby Brissett.

Ben DiNucci calls Dallas Cowboys’ defeat to Arizona Cardinals ‘absolutely embarrassing’

Speaking during a CBS NFL Week 8 recap, DiNucci did not hold back when discussing Dallas’ latest collapse.

“This was absolutely embarrassing today,” he said. “They s****. I’m lost for words, honestly. They have so much talent on both sides of the ball, and year after year, week after week, all we see is just letdowns from them.”

DiNucci also questioned what needs to change within the organisation, adding: “Something needs to change. Somebody needs to look themselves in the mirror. I don’t know who it is, but that was an embarrassing loss for them. They had a 10-point lead with a couple of minutes left.”

Dallas had entered the fourth quarter with a 17-10 advantage before Prescott’s five-yard rushing touchdown made it 24-10. However, the Cardinals responded with three consecutive touchdown drives to force overtime.

Minshew completed 17 of 23 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception. Arizona scored touchdowns on each of its final four regulation possessions.

Prescott, meanwhile, finished with 195 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Dallas managed just 261 total yards compared with Arizona’s 467.

The defensive struggles were equally concerning, with Tyler Allgeier rushing for 147 yards and a touchdown while Michael Wilson recorded 111 receiving yards.

DiNucci’s criticism comes after Dallas also lost to the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier in the season. The defeat has added to the pressure on head coach Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys’ leadership.

Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms has also suggested there are growing doubts about Prescott’s future in Dallas, claiming the organisation could be losing patience.

However, moving on from the quarterback would be financially difficult. Prescott’s contract carries significant dead-cap consequences, with a potential release before June 1 reportedly leaving Dallas with a $131 million hit.

For now, the Cowboys need a response on the field. Their next opportunity comes against the Indianapolis Colts, with another poor performance likely to intensify the scrutiny surrounding the franchise.
