Angel Reese's strong individual performance wasn't enough to stop the Atlanta Dream's recent slide, and Thursday night's loss came with another costly development. The Dream forward recorded yet another double-double in Atlanta's 81-76 loss to the Washington Mystics, finishing with 13 points and 13 rebounds. But Reese also picked up her sixth technical foul of the 2026 WNBA season, putting her just two technicals away from an automatic one-game suspension.

With Atlanta now on a four-game losing streak after opening the season 12-4, Reese's growing technical foul total has become another storyline to watch as the second half of the season approaches.
Why Angel Reese was assessed a technical foul
The technical occurred during the third quarter after Reese drove to the basket against Mystics center Shakira Austin. Officials initially whistled Austin for a defensive foul as Reese converted a difficult layup. However, Washington challenged the call, prompting a video review.
After reviewing the play, the officials overturned the foul and instead assessed Reese a technical foul, ruling that she made an unnatural flailing motion that struck Austin in the face. The reversal not only erased Atlanta's foul call but also added another technical to Reese's season total.
Angel Reese will receive another fine
The technical also comes with a financial penalty. Under WNBA rules, Reese will be fined $1,000 for her sixth technical foul of the season. The league's escalating discipline structure calls for:
Technical fouls 1-3: $500 fine each
Technical fouls 4-7: $1,000 fine each
Eighth technical foul: $1,500 fine plus an automatic one-game suspension
After her fifth technical earlier this season, Reese also received the league's standard warning letter notifying her that she was approaching the suspension threshold. Now sitting at six technical fouls, the Dream star has little room for error over the remainder of the regular season.

Dream can't afford to lose Reese
While the technical foul grabbed headlines, Reese once again showed why she's become one of Atlanta's most valuable players. She posted her latest double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds while helping keep the Dream within striking distance throughout the game.
Rhyne Howard led Atlanta with 24 points and four steals, while Allisha Gray contributed 17 points. Washington was paced by Shakira Austin's 21 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, with Kiki Iriafen adding 14 points and 10 rebounds. Atlanta's recent skid has dropped the Dream to 12-8 after what had been one of the WNBA's best starts to the season.
With Reese now just two technical fouls away from an automatic suspension, maintaining her composure could become just as important as her production on the floor. Losing one of the league's top rebounders for a game due to technical fouls would be another setback for a Dream team looking to regain its early-season momentum.
