One of the biggest and strangest stories to emerge this week has been United States President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America as a result of an ongoing trade dispute with Canada. The decision prompted longtime NFL broadcaster Al Michaels to poke fun at Trump during a preseason game broadcast, and it sounds like Trump’s supporters aren’t happy.

According to a report from one prominent political analyst, Trump’s supporters are now threatening to “boycott” the NFL over Michaels’ comments.

Michaels Mocks Trump

During Thursday night’s preseason matchup between the Cleveland Browns and the New England Patriots in Cleveland, the broadcast showed a view of Lake Erie, which sits along the city. Michaels took the opportunity to make a joke about Trump’s recent decision to rename Lake Ontario.

“That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie. We’re not quite sure at this point,” Michaels said. “But we’ll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it’s going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo (for Week 1).”

“Anyway, you know what I’m talking about,” Michaels said with a laugh. “Some of you do. Read the news.”

Michaels, of course, was referring to Trump’s recent decision to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America with an executive order.

Trump Fans Reportedly Planning ‘Boycott’

While many people viewed Michaels’ remarks as a harmless jab at Trump’s latest decision, it appears that some of the president’s supporters were quite angry at Michaels and the NFL for the comments.

Brian Allen, the founder of the political news and commentary platform The Allen Analysis, reports that Trump’s supporters are now threatening to boycott the NFL as a result of Michaels’ comments.

“Trump supporters are threatening to boycott the NFL after Al Michaels mocked Trump’s renaming of Lake Ontario during a preseason broadcast,” Allen wrote in a post on X.

It’s worth noting that Allen did not provide any examples of Trump supporters actually threatening an NFL boycott. As a result, it remains unclear where these alleged threats are being made, whether on social media or through other channels.

Still, this certainly would not be the first time that conservative Americans threatened to boycott the league. In fact, this season marks the 10-year anniversary of Colin Kaepernick’s iconic national anthem protests, which sparked widespread outrage from conservatives across the country, many of whom claimed to boycott the league at the time.

Whether or not Michaels’ comments actually result in a significant boycott remains to be seen.
