During the St. Louis Cardinals’ 7-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday, Sept. 4, Oliver Marmol “took issue” with home plate umpire Doug Eddings seemingly telling Hancel Rincon to adjust his slightly crooked hat.
Marmol, 40, and Eddings, 57, can be seen arguing in videos shared on social media, moments after Rincon, 24, straightened his hat and was given a thumbs-up by Eddings.
“He is telling Rincon to put his hat on straight,” Cardinals broadcaster Brad Thompson said while trying to make sense of the moment, perThe Athletic. “That’s why Leo [Bernal] was laughing behind the plate. Like, ‘Are you serious, dude?’ If that’s what happened, if Doug Eddings behind the plate was telling Rincon to fix his hat, that is a flat-out embarrassment.”

“That is not his job to do,” he added. “He’s not wearing his hat backwards. This wasn’t a uniform violation.”
After the game, Eddings recalled that the batter, Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman, allegedly asked if Rincon was allowed to “wear his hat like that.”
“I really didn’t know, but it was really, really crooked,” Eddings said, per MLB. “I asked the catcher to tell him to straighten his hat out, and the pitcher did. Nobody said anything until he gave up a couple runs.”
Rincon, who was making his first major league appearance, said that, while he didn’t argue with Eddings about his instruction, he had “no idea why he told me to do it.”
“It’s fine,” he added, noting that the comment didn’t distract him from his debut.
After a few moments of Marmol and Eddings arguing, the umpire ejected Marmol in the bottom of the sixth inning and called a pitch-clock violation.

“I had an issue with Doug,” Marmol said after the tense moment, per MLB. “Just Doug. He took it upon himself to tell our rookie pitcher the kid’s ‘not going to wear his hat on my field that way.’ You got Dontrelle Willis, CC Sabathia, Pedro Strop — plenty of guys that have worn it way more tilted. I have an issue with that. That’s just a power-hungry move, in my opinion.”
He later said on the Cardinals’ broadcast that the incident was “pretty embarrassing” on Eddings’ part.
“Some words exchanged there,” Marmol said, per The Athletic. “We have a kid making his debut, and in between an at-bat, he tells him that he needs to fix his hat and, ‘The kid’s not going to wear his hat like that on my field.’ Last I checked, this is Coors Field, so I took issue with it.”
